The Andaman Islands
The Andaman Islands are an Indian archipelago in the Bay of Bengal. These roughly 300 islands are known for their palm-lined, white-sand beaches, mangroves & tropical rainforests. Coral reefs supporting rich marine life makes these islands a popular diving and snorkeling site. Indigenous Andaman Islanders inhabit the more remote islands, many of which are off limits to visitors.
Andaman and Nicobar Islands, union territory, India, consisting of two groups of islands at the southeastern edge of the Bay of Bengal. The peaks of a submerged mountain range, the Andaman Island and their neighbours to the south, the Nocobat Island, form an arc stretching southward for some 620 miles (1,000 km) between Myanmar (Burma) and the island of Sumatra, Indonesia. The arc constitutes the boundary between the Bay of Bengal to the west and the Andaman Sea to the east. Port Blair (on South Andaman Island) is the territorial capital.
Long fabled among travellers for its gorgeous beaches, underwater wonders and primeval location in the middle of nowhere, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands are still the ideal place to get away from it all. The archipelago has around 572 islands of which only 36 are open to tourists. The island population is an interesting mix of south Indian and Southeast Asian settlers, as well as Negrito ethnic groups on some islands whose arrival here still has anthropologists baffled.
The most widely spoken language on the islands is Bengali followed by Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam. Andaman Creole Hindi is also widely used as a trade language in the Andaman islands.
In Port Blair, the main places to visit are the Corbyn’s Cove, Cellular Jail, Rajiv Gandhi Water Sports Complex, Ross Island & North Bay, Fisheries Museum, Anthropological Museum, Naval Marine Museum (Samudrika), Forest Museum, Chatham Saw Mill, Science Centre, Sagarika Emporium (The Cottage Industries), Chidiya Tapu, Mount Harriet, Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Park and Wandoor Beach.
Havelock Island famous for Radhanagar Beach & Elephant Beach and Water Sports Activities like Scuba Diving / Sea-Walk / Snorkeling; Neil Island famous for Bharatpur, Laxmanpur & Sitapur Beach.
In North & Middle Andaman, Limestone Cave & Mud Volcano at Baratang Island; Aamkunj Beach, Dhaninalah & Morice Dera Beach at Rangat; Karmatang Beach at Mayabunder; Ross & Smith (Twin Islands), Saddle Peak and Kalipur & Ramnagar Beach at Diglipur.
